An automatic ice maker for ice at your fingertips.

The meaning of the word automatic has been lost on manufacturers.  Take an automatic car for instance, you still have to drive the thing, the only trouble you are spared is changing gears. Automatic is supposed to mean that the product does whatever it is designed to do without you having to do much more than push a button or turn a dial. One machine that does live up to this definition is an automatic ice maker.  All that is required from you is plug into a constant supply of water and electricity and you have ice on demand every minute of every day.  All though technological advances are being made every day, I look forward to the day that all appliances operate as autonomously as the automatic ice maker.

In a day and age where most of our time is consumed by work and school and travelling to and from work and school, fully autonomous appliances are no longer luxuries, but a necessity. Just think about owning the fridge that has an automatic ice maker, water dispenser and built in computer. The intelligence of a fridge that knows when someone in your home has finished the milk and can order another liter from the corner grocery store via the internet is what all appliance manufacturers should aspire to achieve.

Other appliances that come with the promise of autonomy are your washing machine and dryer.  But you still have to add washing powder and fabric softener and set the machine to the right cycle. And the dryer ends up making more work for you by creasing your clothing so effectively that you spend twice the amount ironing your clean washing. Imagine a dishwasher that could pack away your clean dishes for you or even scan the dishes to find out which were not cleaned properly and set itself for a second cycle.  All I want for Christmas is the intelligent fridge that can do everything and more than it is supposed to.
